British citizenship essentially allows you to become a British citizen. In some cases you may be allowed dual nationality. If not, you will renounce your old nationality. Acquiring gives your rights and protection, the ability to travel, access to services. There are many other reasons why people may also acquire British citizenship.

In so far UK Immigration laws are concerned, if you have been granted indefinite leave to remain after usually completing 5 years in a visa category or after 1 year of waiting from the date of your ILR, you will be entitled to apply for Naturalisation as a British citizen.
